CoClear CDP Partnership extends into second reporting period

CDP has again partnered with CoClear to analyze the 2016-17 product life cycle data that was submitted as part of CDP’s Supply Chain Climate Change Information request.   CDP collected primary data from over 4,800 companies on behalf of 99 Supply Chain members.  This represents the largest data set ever collection by CDP’s Supply Chain Program.

Over 275 Companies from 79 countries representing 42 global industry category sectors (GICS) participated in the product disclosure question in 2016 and 2017.  These companies provided life cycle emissions data on over 506 products; 399 products for 2016 and 107 in 2017.  In 2016 there were products from 41 sectors: in 2017 products from 20 sectors.  The was a 1%increase in the number of products disclosed from 2015 to 2016.  The primary reason for the drop between 2016-17 was the commencement of participation fees.  The data collected from the questionnaire provides an opportunity for CoClear to provide deeper insight into sector and product-level emissions. 

Prior efforts to understand industry emissions often relied on “top-down” methods of analysis, examining high level, aggregate emissions data. With top-down analyses, it is often difficult to pinpoint with particularity the causes of carbon emissions – and which products and brands in a company’s portfolio offer the most potential for efficiency improvements.  With an increasing number of initiatives being driven by requesting members  CDP’s supply chain data provides an opportunity for CoClear to perform “bottom-up” analyses of product hotspots and how these vary across industries. By analyzing this data, CoClear seeks to identify which life cycle stage cause highest emissions in each industry and how sectors track and manage these hotspots over time. This can help industries identify efficiency improvements throughout their value chain.

CDP’s tremendous success in collecting this highly relevant supply chain level data opens a door to sector wide and statistically significant efficiency insights. Please see CoClear’s first report on the 2012-2015 date here.

The second report analyzing the latest statistical trends from 2016-2017 will provide further insight into sector wide efficiency trends and be available summer 2018.
